Tunnel ionization within a one-dimensional, undriven plasma sheath

چکیده

In high density, temperature plasmas, the plasma sheath that develops can result in extremely electric fields, on order of tens to hundreds V/nm. Under right conditions, these fields reach magnitudes increase probability electron tunneling ionization occur, resulting one or more electron-ion pairs. The presence then modify development sheath, as well properties such ion and densities potential. tunnel process for hydrogen atoms is demonstrated, this work, implemented a Sandia National Laboratories, particle-in-cell code Aleph. Results are presented application one-dimensional, undriven sheath. Additional results cases consider warm ions neutrals, inclusion electron–neutral collisions, injection neutral particles, various devices, will be discussed.

Simulating a one-dimensional plasma

A plasma is an ionized gas in which some of the electrons are free rather than bound to atoms as in an ordinary gas. The behavior of a plasma is more subtle than the behavior of an ordinary gas. In an ordinary gas the dynamics is dominated by two-body collisions, but in a plasma the particles interact via long-range forces, and this interaction causes the plasma to exhibit collective effects. I...

Tunnel splittings for one dimensional potential wells revisited

The WKB and instanton answers for the tunnel splitting of the ground state in a symmetric double well potential are both reduced to an expression involving only the functionals of the potential, without the need for solving any auxilliary problems. This formula is applied to simple model problems. The prefactor for the splitting in the text book by Landau and Lifshitz is amended so as to apply ...

Electron transport in Coulomb- and tunnel-coupled one-dimensional systems

We develop a linear theory of electron transport for a system of two identical quantum wires in a wide range of the wire length L, unifying both the ballistic and diffusive transport regimes. The microscopic model, involving the interaction of electrons with each other and with bulk acoustical phonons allows a reduction of the quantum kinetic equation to a set of coupled equations for the local...

Ionization Time and Exit Momentum in Strong-Field Tunnel Ionization.

Tunnel ionization belongs to the fundamental processes of atomic physics. The so-called two-step model, which describes the ionization as instantaneous tunneling at the electric field maximum and classical motion afterwards with zero exit momentum, is commonly employed to describe tunnel ionization in adiabatic regimes. In this contribution, we show by solving numerically the time-dependent Sch...

One-dimensional Models of Stationary Plasma Thruster

A stationary plasma thruster (SPT, or Hall Thruster) is an electromagnetic thruster whose properties make it especially suitable for applications such as satellite station-keeping. Fig. 1 represents schematically the geometry of the SPT. Xenon is injected from the anode (rate on the order of 5mg/s), at the end of the dielectric cylinders and on the cathode side, outside the cylinders. We are ma...
